The Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk First Nation acquires the first hybrid fishing vessel in Quebec

The Wolastogiyik Wahsipekuk First Nation, the only Maliseet community in Québec, has acquired an electric hybrid fishing vessel to enhance its commercial fishing activities. The decision was made after attending a boat show where Québec-built aluminum boats were showcased as suitable options for near-shore and mid-shore fishing. They chose a prototype hybrid aluminum fishing vessel from Chantier Navale FMP in Newport. The vessel, named “Ciktek” meaning “the silent one,” is 36 feet long, 12 feet wide, and designed for lobster fishing. It was delivered in May 2023, emphasizing its quiet and eco-friendly electric hybrid technology. This addition marks a significant step forward for the community’s fishing operations.
