The purpose of the Aboriginal and Treaty Rights Education Initiative (ATREI) is to raise awareness and understanding of the Covenant Chain of Treaties and to facilitate discussions on issues related to treaty implementation.

Since the inception of this initiative in 1998; the APC staff has conducted approximately 544 sessions in the Atlantic region.  And that in this reporting period alone, we have presented to approximately 915 First Nations and non-First Nations audiences on Aboriginal & Treaty Rights.

This year, the APC staff has successfully completed 23 information sessions on Treaties.  These presentations were held mainly at schools, universities, First Nation communities.  As part of this initiative and in building bridges between First Nations and non-First Nations communities, we have successfully completed 3 Intercultural Forums.

Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nation Chiefs Secretariat Inc. Treaty Education Initiative Objectives:

1.  To raise awareness of treaties.
2.  To examine the spirit & intent of treaties.
3.  To create a collection of views on treaties utilizing knowledge and views of Elders, women and the  youth.

Treaty Information Sessions

As part of Treaty Education Initiative, it is our intent to educate both First Nations communities and the public about the Mi'kmaq Maliseet and Passamaquoddy treaties and treaty related issues. To do this, we are extending invitations to First Nation communities and also to the public (Federal and Provincial Departments, universities, schools, cable television, organizations etc) to host a Treaty Information Session that includes both Historical and Legal Presentations. Also, TEI has a pool of Resource Contacts, who are specialized in their respective fields (Lawyers, Professors, Historians, Elders, etc), to do the Legal/Historical presentations.
