The Strategic Plan
We believe that long-term plans need to be grounded in guiding principles and a common vision.
The principles, endorsed by the Chiefs, have helped in the development of a common vision of success in the strategic plan, to build an aboriginal economy.
The Chiefs have outlined four major goal statements and priorities for the plan:
- To build the net worth of Aboriginal communities by increasing Aboriginal control of land, resources and property throughout Atlantic Canada.
- To strengthen Aboriginal Peoples businesses, so that ownership, income, and employment from businesses are comparable to non-Aboriginal rates.
- To develop a skilled Aboriginal workforce that can fully participate in the regional economy.
- To establish and maintain sound baseline information on the Atlantic Aboriginal economy, to provide evidence of progress and opportunity.
The plan also proposes new vehicles to properly carry out the full plan, and an implementation schedule to ensure ongoing accountability for progress.

- Integration with environmental outcomes
- Based on the determinants of health
Our Vision for the Aboriginal Economy
"Our communities have strong, independent economies that generate wealth for our people, who are now self-reliant.
We have businesses in diversified sectors, and corporations come to us to develop partnerships that recognize First Nation lands, resources, and governance.
Our members are motivated to work, are increasingly educated and trained, and actively participate in ever higher paying jobs.
Our Aboriginal governments work together to negotiate appropriate resource arrangements and identify future opportunities, while ensuring the environmental and social health of our communities and protecting our basic rights."
