Atlantic First Nations Housing & Infrastructure Network

The Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nation Chiefs (APCFNC) initiated discussions to prepare Atlantic First Nations for the upcoming challenges related to safe drinking water, wastewater protocols, source water protection requirements and ongoing housing needs. The result of these discussions was the creation of the Atlantic First Nation Housing and Infrastructure Network (AFNHIN) during a First Nation forum in June 2006. In 2007, all Atlantic Region First Nation communities provided direction to proceed with the creation of the AFNHIN. A concept paper on the network was developed and presented to the All-Chiefs, in May of 2007 and a resolution was passed which supported the idea of moving forward.

The AFNHIN has taken shape over the years, developing from a concept into something more concrete, with discussion and strategic planning sessions to identify the direction of the network, a two day strategic planning workshop was held in February 2008 to identify strategic planning opportunities for the network. This was followed by a strategic planning session held in July 2008 to develop a vision, and performance measurement framework, as well as to create organizational structure within the network.

The AFNHIN exists to provide quality advice and strategic direction in the areas of housing, water, wastewater, and emergency response planning. The AFNHIN improves information flow among Atlantic First Nations communities, regional and tribal First Nations organizations and the federal government on issues related to housing and infrastructure.
