Community Journeys - Pathways to a Sustainable Future
This conference, hosted by the Atlantic Community Planning Committee, in partnership with the Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nation Chiefs, seeks to highlight the work Atlantic First Nations are doing to create exciting, sustainable economic opportunities in the region, as well as explore best practices being undertaken both nationally and internationally.
Specifically, this conference will:
• Promote and facilitate learning and sharing of experiences as communities move forward on their journey to become sustainable – socially, economically and environmentally;
• Support a community of practice in community development for practitioners and leaders by strengthening networking opportunities and building essentials skills; and
• Facilitate opportunities for investment in First Nation communities.
Our Conference Theme
This year’s conference theme is: Community Journeys – Pathways to a Sustainable Future.
As the title suggests, at the heart of the conference is the message that comprehensive community planning is not a short-term notion. It is about tangible progress and movement forward toward sustainability for future generations. The focus on a community’s journey (as opposed to an individual’s journey) tells us that by coming together, true comprehensive development can take place.
The pathway symbolizes the trails and routes of the past that our ancestors took as they moved from place to place sustaining their families, bands and communities. The pathway is a symbol of the route we must take, which is not straightforward and easy, but which involves sharp turns, obstacles and even portages across murky issues. However, the ultimate goal for our communities is sustainability of our economies, our environments, and our societies.
